Why do we have two kidneys?
We are fortunate to have both kidneys as a consequence of evolution. With two kidneys, one can rest and clear itself of the accumulated waste while the other works. If we had only one we could live, but it would work at very forced speeds throughout our lives. The body has evolutionary and in embryonic development, bilateral symmetry.
The body shows an external bilateral symmetry that is not maintained internally because it presents many asymmetries in the position of the different organs. In the initial stages, we have a heart, a liver, a spleen located in the middle of the body, and other double organs, which divide in the middle and grow apart in development but start from the same type of embryonic tissue. Thus, the double organs divide in two, and the only ones “move” from the center to the corresponding side, “giving the impression”, in the end, that we are not symmetrical because the unique organs are each on one side.
Many organs are duplicated, others are not. The liver for example or the heart are not duplicated but well are the kidneys, lungs and even the brain consist of two almost symmetrical halves although with different functions.
How do the kidneys work?
The kidneys are two small organs located on each side of the spine, below the ribs. They play an important role in eliminating excess waste, balancing electrolytes and creating hormones. As a pair of vital organs that perform various functions to keep the blood clean and chemically balanced. Understanding how the kidneys work can help you keep them healthy.
Kidneys are advanced reprocessing machines. They help your bones stay healthy, tell your body when to make new blood cells, and even help you stay upright when you’re walking around all day by taking care of your blood pressure.
Each day, a person’s kidneys process approximately 190 liters of blood to remove about 2 liters of waste products and excess water.
The kidneys remove waste and water from the blood to form urine. Urine flows from the kidneys to the bladder through the ureters. The bladder stores urine until it is released when you urinate.
How kidney stones form
Kidney stones form when urine contains more gem-forming substances, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric corrosive, than the fluid in urine can weaken. Your urine may need substances that prevent the gemstones from sticking together, establishing an ideal climate for kidney stones to form. Kidney stones are bits of strong material that structure in one of the two kidneys when there are undeniable levels of specific minerals in the urine.
Kidney stone or known as Renal Calculi is caused when the measure of water in the body is brought down. On the off chance that you’re not ingesting a sufficient amount of water in a day, your casing will get dried out and disturb the strength of retaining significant minerals and nutrients and sifting the harmful materials blessing inside the casing.
Along these lines, when the water content in the body is low, calcium begins to go through the urinary plot rather than water. Later calcium precious stones during their development can cause little bleedings inside the body which makes blood accompany pee. Along these lines, it is essential to drink water and keep ourselves hydrated
Hardiness can also create different signs of kidney stones imaginable and seriously affect your health. However, people who are overweight can also experience the harmful effects of the particular negative consequences of having kidney stones. Our bodies are so interesting. As you say they are symmetrical on the outside but internally contain different organs in different places. Luckily we do have two kidneys.
The list of foods for good kidney health are all foods I like and consume regularly, so this is good for me. I also exercise regularly and do some resistance training, so I think that my kidneys should be in good health.
Recently, a friend of mine suffered for over a week with kidney stones. I saw him every day, and he did not look good, He was in constant pain, despite being on pain medication, and was not able to sleep… he became very irritated and grumpy. We were all relieved when he was finally able to pass the kidney stones out through his urine.
Thanks for bringing awareness to a very important subject.

Hey Venche, this is some great info about kidneys you presented here! My dad just got diagnosed with kidney disease and he is diabetic as well so it is always a struggle to know what to allow him to eat because some foods are good for diabetics but harmful for kidneys and vice versa! I like how you mentioned that exercise is important in flushing out excessive salts from the body. But I was wondering what you thought about oil intake. What kinds of oils are best for people with kidney disease?
Hi Sasha,
Thanks for your feedback,
As diabetes with kidney disease, he can always eat cauliflower, onions, eggplant & drink water, clear diet sodas, and unsweetened tea.
